Sunni Solomon

CCBC

(Pronouns: He/Him/His)
Sunni L. Solomon II is a lifelong educator who credits his perseverance and success in higher education largely to two very important support networks: the Black men who stepped in as mentors, and the Black women who unselfishly offered themselves up as othermothers. Grounded by an ethic of care that embraces the theories of meaning and mattering, Sunni has been actively engaged in developing and enhancing supportive eco-systems that uplift Black boys and men. Notable accomplishments include co-authoring book chapters related to the history, culture, and societal impact of Historically Black Colleges & Universities in edited volumes for both Taylor Francis and SUNY Press. In 2019 he received the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) Men & Masculinities Knowledge Community Award for Outstanding Campus Service based on work performed to implement student success, retention, and life skills programming and mentoring opportunities for undergraduate men of color over a 5-year period at University of Baltimore. Currently Mr. Solomon serves as inaugural director of CCBC’s longstanding Male Student Success Initiative (MSSI) – a holistic student support, retention and success eco-system designed to engage and advance men of color. Under his leadership this initiative has grown from 120 student participants to 450+ participants in a 2-year period and graduated nearly 30 men of color in spring 2024.

Sunni earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania – The nation’s 1st Historically Black College, and received a master’s degree in College Student Affairs from Eastern Illinois University. Currently he is a doctoral candidate (ABD) in the PhD Higher Education Administration program at Morgan State University.
